Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid up to 100 times more potent than morphine, continues to pose a significant public health crisis in Syracuse, New York, and across the nation. Locally, Onondaga County has seen alarming increases in overdose deaths, with a 40% rise reported in 2020 compared to the previous year. These trends mirror broader national challenges, where fentanyl is implicated in the majority of opioid-related deaths due to its potency and prevalence in counterfeit pills and mixed substances.
The CDC table highlights fentanyl as the leading cause of drug-related overdose deaths in the United States.

Nationally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports an unprecedented 10.6% decline in drug-related deaths in 2024, which marks a hopeful reversal from previous years when fatal overdoses regularly increased by double-digit percentages. This improvement demonstrates the importance of continued intervention and support in reversing the opioid crisis, both in Onondaga County and across the country.
Naloxone (Narcan) is a life-saving medication that can reverse the effects of a fentanyl overdose.
Crouse Health and the Onondaga County Health Department, offer free naloxone kits and training on its use.
Even after naloxone is administered, fentanyl overdoses require professional medical intervention.

Don't leave the person unattended until the medical professionals arrive.
Monitor the person's breathing.
Fentanyl overdoses often suppress breathing, so using a breathing barrier, if available can help keep oxygen flowing until narcan takes effect or medical professionals arrive.
